Of Obama and Disasters

Well, obviously the Presidential election is the biggest show in town these days.  There other other things we would like to talk about, but something related to this historic election always pops up that we find ourselves unable to resist commentary.

During a typically softball interview with CNN, Obama was asked by Anderson Cooper a rather weird question trying to tie in the experience issue between Senator Obama and Governor Palin as it relates to disaster response.  Frankly we still don't fully get the correlation Cooper was trying to make, but....see if you can figure out what Obama is trying to convey here....it's a sort of Frankenstein answer to the poorly worded question.  The video of this exchange is located here (the question and answer are at the end of the interview):

Here's a quote for those of you who can't sit through the interview - as Obama is getting pretty good at filling the air with lots and lots of words without saying much of anything...."My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wassilla, has I think 50 employees. We've got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – we have a budget of about three times that just for the month,” Obama responded.

Our ability to manage large systems and to execute I think has been made clear over the past couple of years and certainly in terms of the legislation I’ve passed in the past couple of years, post-Katrina.”

Our points:

1) We guess the Alaskan State budget was too big to make a comparison too, so Obama's team had him go with Wassilla.

2) Having 2500 (presumably paid) campaign employees is nothing to brag about.  Think of all the money being burned by both sides, and what could be done with that cash.  After all, there are starving terrorists in Afghanistan!

3) A budget of 36 million per month for the Obama Campaign is also not something we would consider bragging about.   If it were us, we'd be more than a little embarrassed by that factoid.  How long has Obama's crew been burning cash at that rate anyway?

4) Obama is insinuating that the running of his campaign is equivalent experience to being a public executive.  So let's try to understand this - Obama is qualified to be President of the United States because he is 'running' a campaign to be President of the United States?  When you have to add this 'experience' as part of your Presidential qualifications....well, YIKES!

5) We tried but were unable to find the specific disaster related legislation Obama claims responsibility for. However, Obama is really showing full detachment from reality if he seriously believes that crafting legislation for this or that component of disaster preparedness, or whatever it was, qualifies him as an experienced Executive in this area.  It just so happens that we here at TheStupidNation.com have been doing volunteer disaster preparedness/response work for at least the last 15 years.  Obama doesn't know what he doesn't know.  Another instance where this naiveté would be charming, if he were not an applicant for "the most powerful, complicated, difficult job in human history."

6) We know this is just a turn of phrase, but Obama is not yet Emperor, and thus he doesn't get to "pass legislation".  Congress does that, and in the past, has frequently done so without Senator Obama's help, thank you very much.  Take a look at the number of 'NV' (Not Voting, Excused, Absent, or Present) items in this comprehensive list of Obama's Senatorial voting record.
