Governor Christie Shows What Political Courage Is All About
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie showed his mettle today by vetoing a tax bill passed by the state's liberal legislature. At issue - a so-called millionaires tax. Christie vowed he would veto any bill that raised taxes, and he made good on that promise.
In today's climate, Christie could have easily taken the path of least resistance. If he had raised taxes on the wealthiest of residents, they, as block of votes, could do little to sway a future election. But Christie has been saying he is not looking to election cycle horizons, he is looking past them, determined to try to fix the state's myriad of structural/fiscal problems. We salute him for it.
According to a pesky study reported by the very liberal NJ Star Ledger shows that a whopping $70 billion in wealth has fled the state, primarily due to taxes.
Christie understands that increasing taxes on already one of the highest taxed population demographics in the country will only accelerate the departure of the wealthy, which in turn will lead to lower tax revenue for a state that relies on the top 1% income earners to carry 40% of the income tax load. Christie gets it, but liberals don't. It's a hallmark of liberalism - the "dismal science" of Economics is as foreign to a liberal as alien life in outer space.
I urge the Governor to soldier on.
There is hope.
