Amid all the hubbub, and hysteria surrounding a madman's lethal rampage in Arizona, news slipped by almost unnoticed of the passing of quiet American who served his country bravely and with exceptional distinction. 

Thus, I pause here to note the passing of citizen-soldier Major Richard D. Winters , central figure in the book Band of Brothers, a consummate combat leader, and an American hero.
