Alienating Our Allies - Obama Style

The big news of the day is Obama trying to sell out Israel to their sworn mortal enemies.

This would be funny if it weren't so sad.  Back in the day, the liberal press relentlessly attacked President Bush for his go-it-alone-if-we-have-to approach to dealing with our enemies.  The press declared Bush damaged our standing with world leaders by forming a coalition of the willing and taking out Saddam Hussein.  Indeed the number of other nations that provided boots on the ground during direct combat in Iraq was a paltry three, prompting academic debates over the definition of the phrase.

If only President Bush had made a "gutsy" move and sent in Seal Team Six to dispatch Hussein.   Think of all the national treasure we could have saved.

So Obama shows up, campaigning for President,  and pledges to repair our relations with our allies.  Well, so far, Obama has successfully pissed off many of our allies, notably throwing Poland and Great Britain under the bus in treating with the Russians.  This is not the first time Obama has skunked the Israelis, as noted in this blog post from a year ago.  I can't help but wonder if Obama consulted with our Israel allies before throwing them under the bus this time, or just unceremoniously pushed them from behind.  Either way, the only other President who has displayed more disdain for our only relatively consistent ally in the region is the anti-Semite Jimmy Carter.

This latest dropping of a giant turd on Israel was claimed to be Obama's overture to the Muslim world after he ordered Osama Bin Laden's brains blown out.   To me, this Israel sell-out smacks of appeasement, and very bad appeasement at that.  As Israel as already alluded to, on the modern battlefield, Israel's old borders are tactically indefensible.  Therefore, calling for Israel to withdraw to these borders is more or less akin to exposing their jugular to their multitude of sworn enemies.  A very curious form of appeasement.

In the famous line from the movie The Godfather Part II, the Don advises to keep the family's friends close, and their enemies closer.  That may well be a winning strategy.  However, keeping your friends alienated and vulnerable to destruction, and your enemies close...that doesn't strike me as the winning play.  At all.

Do you recall what Winston Churchill said of appeasement?

“An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last."

It is not possible to appease those sworn to the destruction of Israel unless you hand the Israelis over to our mutual enemies on a plate. And that would only buy us a little time.

Our President at work.  National humiliations galore.
